Postcode search

The postcode search on the home page asks postcodes.io, a free service built on the same ONS, Ordnance Survey and Royal Mail open data, for the location of the postcode you type. Your browser sends it directly; we do not receive it.

The map

The map’s base layer is an England extract of Protomaps’ build of OpenStreetMap data, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence. We serve it ourselves, so viewing the map sends nothing to a map provider.

Each practice is placed at the centre of its postcode (from the postcode lookup above), not at its building. A postcode covers about 15 addresses on average, which is close enough for a map. Practices that share a postcode, often several practices in one health centre, share one point, and clicking it lists them all.

Services that are not ordinary practices

NHS England’s organisation register gives special allocation schemes, walk-in centres, extended-hours hubs and practices for one group of people the same codes as any other GP practice. We find them by name, by list size and by the age and sex of their registered patients (General Practice Workforce, August 2026), and check each one against what the service itself, the NHS website, the Care Quality Commission or the commissioning NHS body says it is for. Each is recorded with the page we checked, on 21 October 2026. What this changes on the site.

Other data we hold but do not show yet

We have also downloaded NHS England’s Quality and Outcomes Framework figures for 2025-26. They are not shown on the site and are never part of the rating. If we add them, it will be as separate facts with their own source lines.
