What is shown here?

Taking new patients. Whether a practice is taking new NHS patients changes week to week and is not in the open data we use. Each practice sets it on the NHS website, so every practice here links there. You can also search NHS Find a dentist straight away.

The order. The practices that have seen the most NHS patients come first: adults in the last 2 years and children in the last year, added together. That is how much NHS work a practice does, not a grade of its care.

The area figures. People are counted where they live, whichever NHS dentist they went to. Adults are counted over 2 years and children over 1, as the NHS counts them.

A practice is listed when it holds an NHS contract for general dental care this financial year. Practices that only offer private care, and NHS orthodontists, are not listed. The NHS guide How to find an NHS dentist explains the rest.

Common questions about NHS dentists

How do I find an NHS dentist taking new patients?

Pick your area, then check the practices on the NHS website: each practice says there whether it is taking new NHS patients, for adults and for children. You can contact any NHS dentist and ask for an appointment, and some practices keep a waiting list. If you cannot find one, contact your local integrated care board (ICB): it runs dental services in your area.

Do I register with a dentist like I do with a GP?

No. A practice may ask you to fill in a form at your first visit, but that does not mean it will always see you on the NHS. Ask for an NHS appointment each time.

What if I need a dentist urgently?

Any NHS dentist can offer you urgent treatment, even if they are not taking new patients or you have not been before. Phone a practice and ask for an urgent appointment, or call NHS 111.

How much does an NHS dentist cost?

Most adults pay one of three charges for a course of treatment: £27.90 (Band 1, a check-up), £76.60 (Band 2, fillings and extractions) or £332.10 (Band 3, crowns and dentures). Urgent treatment is £27.90. Children under 18 and some adults pay nothing.

Why are the practices in this order?

The practices that have seen the most NHS patients come first: adults in the last 2 years and children in the last year, added together. That is how much NHS work a practice does, not a grade of its care. The figures come from NHSBSA, the NHS body that handles dentists' NHS claims, for July 2026.

How many people see an NHS dentist?

In England, 40.0% of adults saw an NHS dentist in the 2 years to June 2026, and 58.3% of children in the year to June 2026. Each area page has its own figures.
